L.I.F.E. For Health Celebrates 20 Years with Fundraising Gala

Organization dedicated to improving lives in the Philippines and Rwanda will celebrate with special
guest, George Smitherman

2010-05-01 – Livelihood Infrastructure Food Education For Health (L.I.F.E. For Health) and Rogers
Communications proudly present the annual Celebration of L.I.F.E. fundraising gala with special
guest and keynote speaker George Smitherman, former Deputy Premier of Ontario. The gala is on
May 29 at St. Clement of Ohrid in Toronto with doors opening at 6:00 PM.

This year’s event marks the twentieth anniversary of L.I.F.E. For Health, which was founded in
1990 by Filipino-Canadian, Dr. Honorata Migriño-Stephenson. Born into poverty in the Philippines,
Dr. Migriño-Stephenson successfully struggled to become a doctor and immigrate to Canada
where she established L.I.F.E For Health to address the roots of ill-health and poverty in her
homeland. Current Filipino projects include women’s livelihood training, farmers’ micro-credit,
water access and infrastructure support for an orphanage. Shortly before her death in 2008, Dr.
Migriño-Stephenson expressed her desire to broaden the reach of the organization and today
L.I.F.E For Health is engaged in a Rwandan educational support project, starting with a young
genocide survivor who will complete his Information Technology university degree.

“I’m proud to be part of the twentieth anniversary celebration of L.I.F.E For Health,” said George
Smitherman. “As former Minister of Health and Energy and Infrastructure for Ontario, I understand
that lack of infrastructure like water wells and schools has a huge impact on poverty and health in
communities around the world. L.I.F.E. For Health’s focus on the underlying factors of poor health,
including livelihoods, infrastructure, food security and education, is improving the lives of
individuals and communities in Rwanda and the Philippines.”

This year’s gala will take place on Saturday May 29 at St. Clement of Ohrid, 76 Overlea Boulevard,
Toronto and will be hosted by Filipino-Canadian TV personality, Michael Serapio. Guests will
enjoy a reception, dinner, dancing, entertainment from Rwandan and Filipino dance troupes, silent
auction, 50/50 draw and door prizes. Because L.I.F.E. For Health is volunteer-run, all profits go to
projects.

“My mother, Dr. Migriño-Stephenson, understood that a holistic approach to development – not
charity – was the key to alleviating poverty and improving health,” said Leah Stephenson,
President of L.I.F.E. For Health. “The projects we support enable people to go to school, to access
water, to earn an income, which they can use for things like housing, medicine and food that are
essential for health and happiness.”

Tickets to the gala are $45 each or $500 per corporate table, which includes a logo. To purchase,
call (416) 422-0114 or email LIFEforHealth@gmail.com. For more information visit us at
